Types of Workshop Overhead Crane

There are mainly four types of workshop cranes designed for general lifting purposes. Each type has its own pros and cons.

  • Single girder overhead crane

Single girder overhead crane is engineered for light duty or moderate service. It typically lifts under 20 tons with span length less than 28.5m. The hoist and trolley most commonly run on the bottom flange of the bridge girder, thus it offers less lifting height than a double girder crane. The single girder crane tends to be less expensive since it requires simpler hoist and trolley design, less maintenance and easier installation.

  • Double girder workshop crane

Double girder overhead crane is ideal for heavy duty applications, and it can handle over 300 tons. The trolley and hoist generally run on top of the bridge girders, thus the crane provides more lifting height.

Whether the cranes come in single girder or double girder design, they are equally rigid in structure – meaning they provide equal strength and durability for the job.

  • Top running overhead crane

Top running crane is the most commonly used overhead crane system. It can be configured to handle small to very large loads. The crane is supported by the building columns or engineering columns depending on the structure of your facility.

  • Underhung workshop lifting crane

Underhung crane, or under running crane, is ideal for small capacity light duty applications. It is designed to be supported from the building roof structure when the facility height is inadequate or there are no columns in the facility. The underhung design offers excellent side approach and maximizes utilization of the building space. Since the bridge girder and hoist hang underneath the runways, these cranes offer less lifting height.

  • Bridge

The bridge consists of one or two girders and two end trucks. It supports the hoist and trolley to lift and lower a load.

  • Hoist and trolley

The hoist trolley mechanism is used to raise, hold and lower the load. There are different types of lifting media that can be fitted to the hoist, including wire rope and chain.

  • Crane travelling mechanism

The crane runs on rail track that can be mounted on top of the runway beams or hang underneath.

  • Controls

There are three main control options for you to choose from, pendant control, wireless remote control and cabin control. Our overhead cranes come standard with pushbutton pendant. Wireless remote control provides a safer lifting operation since it allows the operator to stand well clear of the crane and the load. Cabin control is recommended for a faster crane or heavier duty application.

  • Safety equipment
